In May 2006, Illinois State University Board of Trustees authorized $2.2M in funding to enable Illinois State to establish budgets, appoint architectural and Engineering consultants, conduct feasibility studies, and initiate the design process for the new Student Fitness Center and McCormick Hall.
The new facility will consist of basketball courts, an indoor track, aerobic spaces, and a climbing wall. The center will also include classrooms, laboratories, and office space for the School of Kinesiology and Recreation Center. The design phase will take approximately 20 months, and construction will take approximately two years beginning in fall of 2008. This project is anticipated to be completed by fall 2010.
The Board of Trustees approves the construction of Student Fitness Center and McCormick Hall at a cost of $43.9 million on October 26, 2007. By July 2008, the project amount has increased to $49.6M. The approximate 170,000 sq. ft. facility will open in January 2011 and will serve the Campus Recreation Services, the College of Kinesiology/Recreation, the Health Promotions and Wellness programs, students, faculty, and staff.
The construction for the new Student Fitness Center and McCormick Hall has been completed with the exception of a few punch list items. Some of the exterior items that cannot be addressed until spring. The dedication of the new facility was held on February 18, 2011.
