The months of October and November are considered a “shoulder” month period for Heating and Cooling. Our central chiller plants that serve many of the main buildings on campus will need to be cycled down and drained for the winter season. The campus heating plant will continue to operate taking on the heating demands based on the outside air temperatures.
Our team has been preparing the buildings as the outside daytime temperatures continue to cool and remain cool. We typically wait for the temperatures in the evenings to be in the mid 30’s and lower at night to switch the buildings cooling systems to the heating systems for all facilities. This procedure will protect our building mechanical systems if temperatures drop below freezing.
Once we take the chiller plant operations offline for the season, we will continuously provide outside air cooling to all facilities as needed for cooling demand. However, as we continue into the month of November and depending on the outside air temperatures, some facilities during this transitioning period may experience warmer and/or cooler temperatures in the building.
The Department of Energy Management apologizes in advance for any uncomfortable temperature experience in the buildings and our team will continue to strive endlessly to help minimize this scenario. If a defined space continues to be warmer or cooler than normal, please submit a work request through iServiceDesk so we can ensure the building HVAC systems are working properly.
